Still Taking A Break...
.

(CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO HAVE A CLOSER LOOK)
.
...but look at these little buggers: two tiny baby snapping turtles submerged in a puddle! Cute now, but I may relocate them to avoid any future meetings (when they're pizza-size). Right now their shells are less than an inch and a half long.

How interesting! I have never seen them. I suppose they must have some in Zoos? Do they bite?

Meggie - Adult snappers get BIG (shell a foot wide) and they have no sense of humor. Being bitten by one would be something like putting your hand in a steel trap.

There used to be a female who would lay her eggs in my garden each spring, but I was finally able to capture her using a shovel and a metal garbage can. Was she ever pissed!! I drove her FAR away to a swamp deeper in the woods and let her go, and that was the end of the snapping turtle problem around here. Until today... ; )

I know you don't want to run into them unexpectedly,still..it's nice to know they seem to be thriving in your neck o' the woods. :)

Awww...

Those turtles look so happy together!

Robin - Too funny! I once had a pet turtle (I bought it from a kid on a train who was swinging it around by the tail), and I named it Super Turt!

Update: While I was in the house downloading photos, they both vanished! Gone off through the woods to grow up in the pond, probably.

Oh, they do look so cute at that size, though!!! But yeah, I've seen pics of full-grown snapping turtles and they're not something to be messed with, by all appearances.

Thanks for the explination about the beaver-pond. My inlaw's live just outside of town across a slough (like a slow-moving, not-so-narrow creek) outside of town, and a couple of years ago the city took it into their heads to replace the culvert used to allow the slough to flow under the road, with an old reused bridge. (This bridge, less than 5 years after installation had to be replaced this summer because it was in such poor shape.) Since then, beavers have taken it into their heads every year to try to dam up the water on the southern side of the bridge to increase their territory. The water this summe reached to just 2 feet below the bottom of the bridge, before the fish & game folks came out & unplugged it most of the way. The water on the other side had gotten to be very little more than a trickle. Not safe. Very cool to see a safely-built beaver-pond!

They look so adorable. But I've seen full grown snappers, so I would not want those two around in a year or so. Little buggers indeed.

they are so little and cute. what do they eat besides toes?

Judy said...

Merelyme - They get a lot less cute as they grow, and they're fond of baby ducks. : ( (When they can't get toes, that is).

Those look exactly like the little turtle Lucy found on our deck. I thought it was a water turtle. I put him in the pond. He disappeared. No idea where he went. But he was just about that size.

Lovely photos, wizard. Besides the baby turtles I like the colored autumn foliage, too.
